Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Upon landing at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by our Mountains 2 Marshes representative and transferred to Arusha for a relaxing evening before the trek. The drive takes approximately one hour, depending on traffic. Arusha sits at the foothills of Mount Meru and serves as the gateway to many of Tanzania’s famous trekking and safari routes. Depending on your budget category, accommodations include the Outpost Lodge for budget travelers, Arusha Planet Lodge for midrange guests, and Arusha Coffee Lodge for luxury travelers. After check in, you may explore local attractions such as the cultural market, the city center or simply unwind and prepare for the upcoming ascent. Dinner is included.
Day 2: Arusha to Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
After breakfast, you begin with a scenic one hour drive to Momella Gate located inside Arusha National Park. This area is known for its open grasslands, alkaline lakes and wildlife, including zebras, giraffes and buffaloes. Registration is completed at the gate before starting the ascent. The trek from Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut covers around 10 km and usually takes 4 to 5 hours. The trail climbs steadily through lush montane forests filled with fig trees, moss covered trunks and vibrant birdlife. Along the way, there are chances to spot colobus monkeys and various antelope species. The hike offers beautiful views of the lower crater and the surrounding plains. Upon arrival at Miriakamba Hut, trekkers enjoy dinner and rest. Extra activities in the area include short forest walks guided by rangers and wildlife spotting around the camp.
Day 3: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
Today’s ascent takes you deeper into the high altitude forest belt and eventually toward the saddle that separates the main peak from Little Meru. This segment covers approximately 5 km and typically takes 3 to 4 hours depending on pace. The trail becomes steeper but rewards hikers with panoramic views of the crater floor, dramatic cliffs and the sweeping Meru landscape. Wildlife sightings are still common as the forest gradually gives way to heather and moorland vegetation. Upon reaching Saddle Hut at 3,570m, you will have time to rest, hydrate and prepare for the early morning summit attempt. Optional acclimatization hikes to Little Meru can be arranged, providing stunning sunset views of Mount Kilimanjaro towering in the distance. Dinner and overnight at Saddle Hut.
Day 4: Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut
Summit day begins in the early hours of the morning for a steady climb toward Socialist Peak, the highest point on Mount Meru at 4,562m. The trek is approximately 5 km to the peak and normally takes 4 to 6 hours due to the steep, rocky and narrow ridge line. Climbers follow a dramatic ascent along the crater rim, offering breathtaking views of the ash cone inside the crater and Mount Kilimanjaro illuminated by sunrise. Standing at the summit provides unmatched photographic opportunities and a sense of accomplishment. After celebrating at the peak, you descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest before continuing down to Miriakamba Hut. The long descent allows you to appreciate the changing vegetation belts and spectacular landscapes. Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.
Day 5: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate to Arusha
The final section of the trek descends through thick montane forest for approximately 10 km, taking around 2 to 3 hours. You will return to Momella Gate where summit certificates are issued, marking your successful completion of the Mount Meru trek. The return transfer to Arusha brings you back to your preferred accommodation for a relaxing evening and a rewarding dinner. Depending on interests, guests may choose extra activities such as cultural market visits, coffee tours or spa relaxation after the trek.
Day 6: Departure
